• Aquivion® N+ 125D/251.612

Aquivion® N+ 125D/251.612 dispersion is based on perfluorosulfonic acid polymer chemistry and has a nominal Equivalent Weight (EW) of 790 g/eq.  The nominal Ion Exchange Capacity (IEC) for this polymer is ~ 1.25 meq/gr.  Polymer concentration for this dispersion is 25 wt%.  The solvent system is >99% water and is free of ethers.

This ionomer dispersion product is based on Syensqo's sustainable technology for a new generation of high-quality Aquivion® N+ ionomers and it is made without fluorinated processing aids.

Aquivion® N+ ionomer dispersions are based on the unique Short Side Chain (SSC) copolymer of Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and Sulfonyl Fluoride Vinyl Ether (SFVE) F2C=CF-O-CF2CF2-SO2F produced by Syensqo Specialty Polymers (formerly known as Solvay Specialty Polymers).

The unique SSC copolymer allows higher crystallinity, improved mechanical properties, and better proton conductivity compared to Long Side Chain forms of the PFSA polymers. Aquivion® N+ ionomers are currently being offered at EW 790, replacing the company’s former D79-25BS grade for usage in PEM fuel cell or PEM electrolyzer electrode inks (anode or cathode), or separator membranes in redox flow batteries (RFB). The introduction of Aquivion® N+ is in line with the company’s commitment to voluntarily phase out the use of fluorosurfactants globally by 2026 and to manufacture nearly 100% of its fluoropolymers without fluorosurfactants.

The Aquivion® N+ dispersions (also called ionomers) are supplied in the acidic form (-SO3H) and are water based. Aquivion® ionomers can be formulated with a variety of solvents (alcohols and dipolar aprotic organic solvents).

Aquivion® N+ 125D/251.612 can be used to produce PEM fuel cell electrodes, catalyst inks for PEM fuel cells and electrolyzers, and electrochemical cell electrodes, to manufacture super-acid catalysts, or gas-to-gas humidifier membranes of high water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), and for the surface treatment of PTFE membranes to improve wetting behavior.

Key Advantages:

• Very high concentration of functional groups for strong proton (or Na+, K+, Li+, etc.) conductivity
• High softening point for high temperature operation well above 80 ºC
• Strong water retention for better fuel cell operation at low-humidity conditions for catalyst inks that are utilizing this dispersion material

Comparison of Short Side Chain and Long Side Chain PFSA Dispersion:

Aquivion® ionomer dispersions are based on the Short Side Chain morphology and they are intended to enable the manufacturing of products with either improved mechanical properties at the same IEC (ion-exchange capacity) or a higher IEC with the same mechanical properties as the products using long side chain (LSC) based PFSA dispersions. A comparison of Short Side Chain and Long Side Chain PFSA from a chemical composition perspective is provided in the following image.

Aquivion® N+ ionomer dispersions are considered hazardous items under DOT and IATA regulation. 125 mL and 250 mL dispersions will incur a hazardous fee to accommodate the regulations based on the final shipping location.

Please note that Aquivion® ionomer dispersions may compromise the seals of the bottles if the dispersion are left in direct contact with the lids for long periods of time. We recommend always storing the bottles in an upright orientation as soon as the shipment is received to lessen the likelihood of inadvertent leakage.
