This is a stabilized cathode electrode designed for AEM electrolysis and other relevant electrochemical applications. The cathode has been stabilized to deal with one of the big challenges facing AEM electrolysis, the detachment of catalyst from ionomer. This stabilized cathode electrode provides exceptional durability in addition to the expected performance, which is enabling the rapid commercialization of AEM electrolyzers.
Technical specifications:
- Thickness: ~300 micrometers (catalyst layer and carbon paper based GDL) with a carbon paper thickness of ~260 micrometers
- Electrochemically Active Materials: 40% Pt/C (Ketjen Black) with a platinum metal loading of 0.4 mg/cm2
- Support: Carbon paper based gas diffusion layer
Catalyst detachment test results:
The sonication tests show the minimal detachment of catalysts from the stabilized cathode electrode.

Note: Ultrasonic treatment for 3 hours at 60 °C, with a power of 200 W and a frequency of 40 kHz, using pure water as solvent.
Durability test results:
The AEM electrolyzers using ElectroHy cathode electrodes show high performance and high durability (see longevity graph below). This durability test was carried out at a current density of 1A/cm2 using 1M KOH at 60°C. The anion exchange membrane was Hydroion 80 micron Reinforced AEM. The electrolyte was supplied only to the anode and cathode was operated in dry (meaning no liquid alkaline electrolyte supply to the cathode). As the anode electrode, Electrohy anode electrode was used.

Handling:
- Handle the product in a clean, dry, low-dust environment.
- Wear clean disposable nitrile gloves during handling.
- Avoid direct contact with the catalyst/active surface to prevent contamination from oils, sweat, salts, etc.
- Do not fold, bend, scratch, or rub the electrode to avoid mechanical damage to the active layer.
- Recommended storage: cool, dry, and protected from light, away from heat sources and corrosive vapors.
