Orion Polymer Ionomers

Orion CM1 resin based ionomer is the industry-leading anion exchange ionomer.  It has long lifetime durability (>1000 hours) and high temperature stability (up to 80 ºC) with an ion exchange capacity of ~2.2 mequiv./gram (in OH- form). Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) manufactured from Orion CMX resin (by Orion Polymer Corporation) demonstrated excellent durability and lifetime compared to many others that were tested in a recent study by one of the prominent natial labs in the world.  NREL's blind study that was conducted in October 2019 showed that AEMs based on Orion's membrane samples can be operated at temperatures of up to 80 ºC with 1M KOH for more than 1000 hours.  Virtually, there was no degradation.  Such excellent durability and high temperature stability make these membrane and ionomer products ideal for electrochemical applications such as hydrogen electrolyzers (i.e,. AEM electrolyzers), alkaline fuel cells, and redox flow batteries. The unique polymer chemistry of Orion CMX makes this material to have secondary functionality such as to be used in an high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell after a simple acid pretreatment.

AEMs or dispersions made with Orion's proprietary resin can potentially be used for the following applications: alkaline fuel cells, alkaline electrolyzers, alkaline batteries, alkaline electrochemical compressors, redox flow batteries, electric vheicles, high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell stacks (after an acid treatment), catalyst ink preparation for alkaline electrodes, and a wide variety of other electrochemical devices and technologies.  AEMs or dispersions manufactured by Orion Polymer Corp. are stable under neutral and alkaline conditions (of up to 1 Molar) for the temperature range of above freezing and 80 deg C.  If the temperature is kept at around room temperature or lower, AEMs and dispersions manufactured by Orion Polymer Corp. will be able to withstand up to 3 Molar alkaline electrolytes.
