Direct Methanol Fuel Cell MEA - 5 Layer (Tion5-W)
Methanol (MeOH) can be utilized directly (without the need for a reformer) with Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEA) for power generation applications. It also allows a liquid fuel to be used directly in a fuel cell instead of a gaseous fuel. The DMFC MEA is often useful in lower power applications.
Direct Methanol Fuel Cell MEA - 5 Layer (Tion5-W) is manufactured with a 127 microns (or 0.005") thick perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membrane and GDL-CT (W1S1011) carbon cloth gas diffusion layer with MPL which has a thickness of ~410 microns. Tion5-W membrane not only cuts down the methanol crossover issues compared to other thinner PFSA membranes, but it also provides good performance compared to other thicker PFSA membranes. GDL-CT (W1S1011) is a highly flexible and compressible carbon cloth based GDL with good fuel cell performance.
The standard configuration for this 5-layer MEA features a high Platinum loading (4 mg/cm²) both for the cathode and a high Platinum Ruthenium Black loading (4 mg/cm²) for anode sides to obtain high performance and long lifetime.
This 5-layer MEA should not be used for PEM DMFC electrolyzer applications in order to electrochemically oxidize the methanol for hydrogen generation applications due to presence of a hydrophobic MPL on the GDL-CT (W1S1011) where they may be significant mass transfer issues for the electrolyzer type applications. While most PEM methanol electrolyzer devices operates at less than 1V per cell (versus NHE) and do not have any carbon oxidation issues for the anode side GDL, presence of PTFE in the MPL can impede with the transfer of methanol/water to the anode catalyst.
Custom sizes and configurations are also available with no minimum order quantities and short lead times even for custom configurations.

Please note: Membrane Electrode Assemblies containing ruthenium catalysts do not adhere to membranes well. It is typical for a GDE containing Ru to delaminate from the membrane. If the MEA is not installed in a hardware, we recommend placing it in a zip-top bag and keeping it under something like a book to keep the GDE and membrane from separating.
