PGM-Free AEM Electrolyzer CCM is a catalyst coated membrane for alkaline water electrolysis applications and free of platinum group metals (PGM-free) for both anode and cathode catalyst compositions. Anion exchange membrane (AEM) provides excellent mechanical strength for the membrane component for longer operational lifetimes. This advanced MEA is manufactured by using the state-of-the-art production technologies where the PGM-free anode and cathode electrocatalysts are directly bonded to the surface of the AEM with the help of an anion exchange dispersion as the binder. Application of the anode and cathode catalysts directly to the AEM surface reduces the physical distance between the anode and cathode electrodes where anion species movement is accomplished with minimal overpotential penalties and, hence, significantly higher alkaline water electrolysis efficiencies can be attained for this state-of-the-art 3-layer alkaline water electrolysis MEA compared to the conventional AEM electrolyzers where anode and cathode electrodes are manually placed on the membrane without any interface generation. The advanced AEM and anion exchange dispersion used for the manufacturing of this "PGM-Free AEM Electrolyzer CCM" product eliminates the limitations and enables the production of 3-layer MEA.
Anode (stainless steel mesh) and cathode (nickel foam) porous transfer layers are included for this advanced 3-layer alkaline water electrolysis MEA product. it is advised to use ~100 micrometers thick gasket for anode and ~350 micrometers thick gasket for cathode side.
- Cathode electrocatalyst: Proprietary Platinum-Group Metal Free (PGM-Free) catalyst
- Anode electrocatalyst: Proprietary Platinum-Group Metal Free (PGM-Free) catalyst
- Membrane: Anion exchange membrane with ether-free backbone and excellent operational lifetime (~60 micrometers thick)
- CCM production: Advanced AEM and anion exchange binder enable the immobilization of the anode and cathode electrodes directly on the membrane surface for high efficiencies
- Wide operational temperature range: up to 55 °C
- Low alkaline electrolyte concentration requirement: Less than 1M concentrations are needed. Alkaline electrolytes with concentrations greater than 1M will induce permanent damage on this product.
- Active area CCMs in production: 5cm2 and 25 cm2 (other sizes can also be manufactured and please contact us at sales@fuelcellstore.com for those and there is a MOQ for such custom inquiries)
- Application: Alkaline water electrolysis for hydrogen and/or oxygen gas generation
- Ni foam // 3-layer AEM-based CCM // Stainless Steel Mesh
- Pre-treatment: Submersion of the 3-layer CCM in 3 Molar KOH for 8 hr
- Active area: 5 cm2
- Cell temperature: 55 °C
- Gasket thickness for cathode: ~350 micrometers
- Gasket thickness for anode: ~100 micrometers
- 7 Nm torque for the mechanical clamping of the electrochemical cell
- Electrolyte: 1M KOH at 3 mL/min flow rate at the anode, 1M KOH at 3 mL/min flow rate at the cathode
- CCM activation (also known as break-in): Constant current mode, at 0.2 A/cm2 for 15 min

Disclaimer: CCMs manufactured in a single batch with the same built and configuration may perform slightly different than each other and this is a natural behavior to observe.
This product can be used as an alternative for the "Reinforced AEM-Based PGM-Free Alkaline Water Electrolysis MEA - 3 Layer".
1-2 weeks of lead time is to be expected for 25cm2 active area dimension. 3-4 weeks of lead time is to be expected for 5 cm2 active area dimension.
