Hydroion™ reinforced anion exchange membrane consists of an alkaline stable polymer backbone and protected cation groups to balance ionic conductivity and chemical stability. This membrane product has a proprietary mechanical reinforcement that provides excellent robustness to the mechanical durability aspect of this product. The recommended alkaline electrolyte range for this product is 0.1 to 1.0 Molar (preferably being close to the 1M for its most efficient operation). With innovative materials design and engineering, Hydroion can withstand harsh operation conditions with best-in-class performance. It is an excellent choice for AEM water electrolysis for green hydrogen production, AEM fuel cells, and other relevant electrochemical applications.
Products Features:
- 80 microns
- High Ion Conductivity: The Gen R series membrane has a OH- (hydroxide anion) conductivity of up to 220 mS/cm at 80 °C.
- Strong Chemical Stability: Resistant to strong alkalis (pH=14, 80 °C, 1 Molar alkaline electrolyte) and oxidative environments for sustained operation.
- Excellent Mechanical Properties: It has high strength (Tensile Strength 60-100 Mpa) and good flexibility because of the proprietary mechanical reinforcement, capable of withstanding mechanical stresses and pressure differentials. The reinforcement option offers tighter dimensional control (~2-3% in the XY direction) without voltage penalty.
- Low Gas Permeability: Helps mitigate gas crossover to improve safety and efficiency (as low as 0.2% H2 in O2 for AEMWE).
- Long Service Life: Designed for durability under elevated temperature and alkaline conditions. Tens of thousands of hours of customers' testing feedback helped us to perfect the product.
Polarization Curve:
The following graph provides polarization curve for 40 microns thick Hydroion unreinforced AEM as an exemplary performance data for the Hydroion membrane series (at a cell temperature of 60 deg C, using 1 Molar KOH electrolyte, Ni alloy electrodes).

Longevity Testing:
The following graph provides 4000 hr of longevity testing in the form of voltage as a function of time at 1 A/cm2 current density (at a cell temperature of 60 deg C, using 1 Molar KOH electrolyte, Ni alloy electrodes) for the unreinforced Hydroion membrane to demonstrate the stability of the polymer resin. Unreinforced and reinforced Hydroion membranes all are utilizing the same ionically conducting polymer material and show exceptional performance and longevity for AEMWE applications and other relevant electrochemical technologies (such as alkaline fuel cells, alkaline sensors, etc.).

Packaging:
A clear back-sheet is there to ensure the membrane remains flat and undamaged during transportation and storage.
Storage:
Keep the sample sealed and store it at room temperature (2-25 °C) until ready to use. Please avoid direct sunlight. The shelf-life of the sample is 12 month under this condition.
Activation (for OH- form):
It is recommended to assemble the cell dry, then circulate 1M (or ~5 wt%) KOH at room temperature through both anode and cathode compartments for a total of 24 hours, replacing the solution once after 12 hours. After heating the cell to 60 deg C, the membrane is ready to be used in AEMWE application.
Optional fast start: 1 hour of alkaline electrolyte submersion of the reinforced AEM at room temperature.
Additional notes:
If it is necessary to cut the film (especially into a circular shape), it is recommended to do so after activation to avoid wavy pattern caused by swelling.
