Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) powders can serve directly as heterogeneous acid catalysts or exchange resins for most reactions. They often offer greater chemical resistance than conventional exchange resins, making them better suited for exposure to aggressive environments.  In addition to these applications, they can also be used to manufacture proton exchange membranes and ionomers using the proper synthesis or manufacturing processes.

Low equivalent weight (EW) grades of PFSA powders will usually have higher number of sulfonic acid sites per gram and as a result of this, they will deliver significantly higher electrochemical functionality per unit mass compared to high equivalent weight grade PFSA powders.  Furthermore, low EW PFSA powders will usually have higher degree of crystallinity compared to high EW PFSA powders and this can help to improve the mechanical robustness and durability of the finished PFSA parts (if it is a membrane, then the membrane component will have much longer operational lifetime and increased mechanical strength as a result of the increased crystallinity aspect).
