Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) Membrane Grade Yuemo S is a composite membrane with a thickness of 0.65 mm (+/- 0.1 mm) designed for alkaline electrolyzers that utilizes concentrated alkaline feed or alkaline electrolytes.  Composite membranes for alkaline electrolyzers are also known as microporous separators in the industry.  A high density fabric is applied to both faces of the composite membrane in order to achieve good gas tightness.  Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) Membrane Grade Yuemo 1.0 has an air tightness of ≥ 600 mm H2O. The resistance of this composite memrbane is ≤ 0.15 Ω · cm2

There is no functional groups in this product for the transfer of the hydroxyl ions.  A microporous separator is a completely different membrane product than an anion exchange membrane for its working principle. For the electrochemical operation of an alkaline electrolyzer with a microporous separator, it is required to use highly caustic electrolyte and have this electrolyte continuously circulated at the anode/cathode compartments.  Due to excellent wetting behavior of the concentrated alkaline electrolytes, they will be naturally wicked into the high density fabric and polymeric intermediate layer and completely saturate the composite membrane and then establish an ionic bridge to the opposite side of the membrane as a result of this wicking phenomenon.  In that regard, the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte would determine the ionic conductivity of the microporous separator.  It is the bulk electrolyte that is wicked into the fabric and intermediate polymeric layer that enables the hydroxyl ion transfer between the cathode and anode electrodes.  The main function of the microporous separator for a conventional alkaline electrolyzer is to act as a physical separator component and minimize the generated by-product mixing during the operation of the alkaline electrolyzer cell.

This microporous separator is not suitable for deionized water or distilled water electrolysis applications without the help of NaOH or KOH chemicals.  During the preparation of the desired alkaline electrolyte, always use deionized water or distilled water that has the desired resistivity.  Do not use any other water sources such as tap-water, drinking water, or reverse osmosis water when preparing the alkaline electrolyte for this microporous separator. Presence of minerals in the tap-water, drinking water, or reverse osmosis water would permanently damage the composite membrane during the stack or cell operation.

Please note that a current lead time of 1 to 2 weeks is to be expected.
