Sustainion® X37-50 Grade T is an alkaline anion exchange membrane with PTFE support for easier handling and increased durability. It is designed for use with a supporting electrolyte and is optimized for anion exchange water electrolyzers.

It consequently must be converted to the hydroxide form by exposing the membrane to a strong base. It is recommended to soak the membrane in a large bath of 1M KOH for 24 – 48 hours to convert the chloride form into the hydroxide form. This activation also helps in strengthening the membrane via cross-linking with KOH. Please note that during this process, the membrane will swell and separate from the PET liner. The PET liner can then be discarded after separation.

This membrane is located between a thin porous PTFE layer coated with sustainion 37 on both sides. The PTFE decreases the transport of water in the membrane so they are less efficient in CO2 electrolyzers.

Please note that this membrane is currently only available in 20 cm x 28 cm sheets.
