Alkaline Electrode

FuelCellStore proudly presents its newest alkaline electrode products as a part of its electrode category. We have listened to your comments and inquiries and finally manufactured the first of its kind electrodes for your need.

Electrochemical devices (fuel cells, electrolyzers, batteries, etc.) come in all sorts of chemistries such as acidic, alkaline, solid oxide, etc. The components used in a particular electrochemical device need to match that chemistry. Majority of alkaline electrochemical devices(such as anion exchange membrane fuel cells or electrolyzers, conventional alkaline fuel cells or electrolyzers, primary or secondary alkaline batteries, etc.) operate based on the principle of conducting hydroxyl or carbonate ions (or another anionic species). That being said, the membrane and catalyzed electrodes used for these applications also need to conduct the corresponding anionic species effectively. For example, if your application is a fuel cell application and the anionic species that are being transferred are hydroxide ions (OH-) between anode and cathode compartments, then the selected membrane, anode electrode (specifically referring to catalyst applied gas diffusion layer), and cathode electrode (specifically referring to catalyst applied gas diffusion layer) in that fuel cell hardware also need to conduct hydroxide ions very efficiently. This same principle is valid for all other electrochemical devices. Our newest generation alkaline electrodes have been fabricated by keeping this scientific principle at the focus.

Ionic resistances at the interphases of "anode catalyst and membrane surface" and "cathode catalyst and membrane surface" will always result in lower electrochemical performances. A mismatch at the interphase of membrane and catalyst such as using Nafion ionomer containing catalyzed electrode with an anion exchange membrane can reduce the electrochemical performance up to 90% or vice versa. Our newest alkaline electrodes are specifically engineered for this purpose and provide excellent hydroxide ion conductivity for any kind of anion exchange membrane fuel cell, alkaline fuel cell, or alkaline battery applications. If the anion in your electrochemical setup is different then hydroxide, you can still use these alkaline electrodes because they effectively transfer other anions such as chloride, bromide, etc. just to name a few.

Our newest generation alkaline electrodes are manufactured with an anion exchange ionomer at the right ratio of catalyst/ionomer. We are providing three different gas diffusion layers that will enable you to conduct experiments with or without liquid electrolyte or without electrolyte (specifically referring to caustic solutions used within conventional alkaline electrochemical devices). If you desire a different gas diffusion layer, we will be more than happy to support you with that too. Furthermore, we are providing our alkaline electrodes with two different catalyst materials options.

Low catalyst loading electrodes (equal or less than 0.5mg/cm2) are designed for cost sensitive applications and are suitable for electrochemical systems needing low amounts of catalyst to support the anode or cathode reactions.

Intermediate catalyst loading electrodes (from 1mg/cm2 to 4mg/cm2) are designed for high performance and are typically used in applications where performance and efficiency are important. These alkaline electrodes also provide sufficient lifetime for your application.

High catalyst loading electrodes (greater than 4mg/cm2) are designed for ultra-high performance and are typically used in applications where performance, efficiency, and extra long lifetime are critical.
