Reinforced AEM-Based PGM-Free Alkaline Water Electrolysis MEA - 3 Layer
Reinforced AEM Based PGM-Free Alkaline Water Electrolysis MEA - 3 Layer is a catalyst coated membrane for alkaline water electrolysis applications and free of platinum group metals (PGM-free) for both anode and cathode catalyst compositions. Reinforcement of the anion exchange membrane (AEM) provides excellent mechanical strength for the membrane component for longer operational lifetimes compared to the unreinforced AEMs. This advanced MEA is manufactured by using the state-of-the-art production technologies where the PGM-free anode and cathode electrocatalysts are directly bonded to the surface of the reinforced AEM with the help of an anion exchange dispersion as the binder. Application of the anode and cathode catalysts directly to the AEM surface reduces the physical distance between the anode and cathode electrodes where anion species movement is accomplished with minimal overpotential penalties and, hence, significantly higher alkaline water electrolysis efficiencies can be attained for this state-of-the-art 3-layer alkaline water electrolysis MEA compared to the conventional AEM electrolyzers where anode and cathode electrodes are manually placed on the membrane without any interface generation. Majority of the commercial AEMs are not suitable for deposition of the anode and cathode electrocatalysts directly on the membrane surface because of Hoffman degradation issues that would occur either with the membrane or anion exchange dispersion components. On the other hand, the advanced AEM and anion exchange dispersion used for the manufacturing of this "Reinforced AEM Based PGM-Free Alkaline Water Electrolysis MEA - 3 Layer" product eliminates the limitations and enables the production of 3-layer MEA.
Anode (stainless steel mesh) and cathode (nickel foam) porous transfer layers are included for this advanced 3-layer alkaline water electrolysis MEA product. it is advised to use ~100 micrometers thick gasket for anode and ~350 micrometers thick gasket for cathode side.
