LiNbO3-coated lithium cobalt oxide (LiNbO3-LCO, CBP-20C) has the chemical formula of LiCoO2 for the active material itself and it has a nanolayer coating of lithium niobate (LiNbO3) in order to minimize the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) decomposition.  Inhibition of SEI decomposition will allow relatively stable cell operation.  LiNbO3 coating also enhances the discharge capability for this material to have higher C rates compared to the uncoated material.  LCO cathode active material has been the most investigated material known to the battery researchers in the area of lithium-ion domain since it was discovered around 1980 by John B. Goodenough's research group.  Large number of consumer electronics have been using lithium-ion battery electrodes based on the LCO cathode powder because of its excellent capacity stability, though this material has lower cpacities and power compared to the NCA-based cathodes.  With the coating of LCO by LiNbO3, further stability is given to the standard LCO material.
